Manchester United are believed to be willing to let Owen Hargreaves leave the club on a Bosman transfer during the summer.
The midfielder joined the Red Devils after a fee reported to be in the region of £17 million had been agreed with Bayern Munich. But he has since made only 39 appearances for United, suffering problems in both knees that required surgery and threatened to end his career.
The 29-year-old tried to make a comeback when he recently featured against Wolverhampton Wanderers - which was his first start for the club in over two years - but it all ended on a sour note as he lasted less than six minutes on the pitch before falling prey to a hamstring injury.
With only six months left on his contract, it had been thought that United would hand the player a pay-as-you-play deal. But The Mirror claims that the club are now averse to the idea, as the midfielder has not been able to return to fitness and prove his mettle on the pitch.
Manchester United will reportedly lose about £34.5m if they should allow Hargreaves to leave Old Trafford.
